Larry Carlton Offering Customized Improvisation Guitar Course
Source: smoothjazznetwork.com

Three-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist Larry Carlton on January 1 (Friday) will officially launch 335 Improv, a master class in composing, soloing and improvisation. It will feature 33 lessions and 377 minutes of video with alternate views. The interactive video course is packaged on 2 DATA-DVD discs that are Windows and Mac compatible.

The cost is $100, but those who purchase an advanced copy of 335 Improv by Thursday (December 31) can participate in a free, 14-day moderated private forum discussing the course material. The forum culminates in two 60-minute, downloadable, video workshops during which Carlton will respond to questions and requests from the forum, and demonstrate additional improvisation concepts.

Additional learning materials include practice rhythm tracks, text commentary, transcription annotations, tab, standard notation and Power Tab so participants can see, hear and play along with the tab and notation at any tempo, without change in pitch.

“Improvisation is a bit of a paradox for musicians,” Carlton says, who says his course is for intermediate to advanced players. “The freedom a player enjoys when improvising might appear to be at odds with the rigid discipline of study and practice necessary to achieve that freedom. However, with study and practice comes fluidity – and the ability to craft compelling improvisations. The more knowledgeable and practiced the player, the more creative and daring a musician can be without being preoccupied by technique and theory. But what should you study and practice? What theory needs to be mastered? How do you learn how to improvise? 335 Improv will guide your journey with an approach that is highly enlightening and extraordinarily accessible.”

In 2007, Carlton – a member of the smooth jazz group Fourplay – released an ambitious, four-CD-ROM package titled 335 Blues, his first guitar-instruction course to be offered in 20 years.
