Groundbreaking Starts On Health Center Named After Wayman Tisdale

Community leaders broke ground on the $20 million Oklahoma University Wayman Tisdale Specialty Health Center in Tulsa, OK, on Monday (January 25). Plans for the clinic have been in the works for more than four years. The decision to honor Wayman Tisdale came last June, a month after he lost his battle with cancer.

Diagnostic and preventive tests and services will be available, like CT scans, MRIs, mammograms, colonoscopies, chemotherapy, outpatient surgery and even an urgent care center. The health center will carry forward his tradition of caring by bringing specialty medicine to undeserved residents in north, west and east Tulsa. It was Tisdale’s battle with cancer that led him to form the Wayman Tisdale Foundation and to also align himself with the University of Oklahoma OU Cancer Institute.

The Wayman Tisdale center is expected to be complete in about two years.

Tisdale lived in Tulsa, and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a three-time All-American. After his pro basketball career, Tisdale became a smooth jazz superstar.
